For officers and agencies
Duty gear on.
Get the fit right.
Duty belts, body armor and radios can make a standard seat belt hard to buckle, and a recessed buckle can be hard to find with gear on. A seat belt extender can solve both problems, as long as it matches the vehicle and is allowed by your vehicle manufacturer and your agency. This guide explains which style officers choose, how to pick a length, what to check before you buy, and how agencies can order for a fleet. We have supplied extenders to law enforcement agencies.
01 / Start with the problem
Why do officers use seat belt extenders?
More belt length
- The belt is too short or too tight with gear on. Duty belts, vests and equipment add bulk. You need more belt length. A regular or adjustable extender adds length.
Easier buckle access
- The buckle is hard to find or reach with gear on. It might sit deep between the seat and console. A rigid extender holds the buckle upright so it is easier to see and reach.
Both reach and length
Both. Contact us to choose one compatible extender that addresses both reach and length. Do not attach one extender to another.
02 / Compare the options
Which extender style should officers choose?
Agencies we supply tend to prefer the 5 inch rigid extender in black. It is the style we recommend as a starting point for most officers.

| Style | What it does | Best for officers who |
|---|---|---|
| Rigid (3, 5 or 7 inches) | Holds the buckle upright so it is easier to see and reach | Have trouble finding or reaching the buckle with gear on. The 5 inch black rigid is the style agencies we supply tend to prefer. |
| Regular (7 or 10 inches) | Adds fixed belt length with flexible webbing | Need more belt length and use the same vehicle and seat each shift |
| Adjustable (9 to 26 inches) | Adds belt length you can set | Share a vehicle with other officers, or wear different gear on different shifts |

How to choose the right length
Choose the shortest length that lets you buckle comfortably with your gear on. Extra length is not extra safety.
- Sit the way you drive, with your duty gear on.
- Start with the 5 inch rigid if you mainly need the buckle brought up where you can find it.
- Choose a regular or adjustable extender if the belt itself is too short to close across you.
- Check the belt position after buckling. The lap belt should sit low across your hips, and the shoulder belt across your collarbone and chest. The belt should lie flat with no twists.
- Tug test. Pull on both connections (the extender in the receptacle, and your belt in the extender) to confirm each is latched.
- If your gear stops the belt from sitting correctly, do not use the extender that way. Contact us with your vehicle and gear and we will help.
04 / Before you buy
Check your vehicle manual and agency policy
Before you buy an extender for a patrol or duty vehicle, check these:
- Your vehicle's owner's manual. Some vehicle manufacturers say how seat belt extensions should be sourced and used, and some restrict use with certain restraint systems, such as inflatable seat belts.
- Your agency's policy. Your agency may have its own rules about aftermarket seat belt extensions.
- Your fleet manager. They can tell you what your agency has approved for your vehicles.
05 / Exact vehicle. Exact seat.
How to confirm the fit for your vehicle and seat
Seat belt tongue and buckle designs differ between manufacturers, models and even model years. The front seats and rear seats of the same vehicle can also use different tongue styles, and police-package vehicles can differ from civilian models. A close match is not enough, so choose by make, model and year, tell us which seat it is for, and never move an extender from one vehicle to another.
- Find your vehicle's collection below and select your model.
- Confirm the model and year listed match your vehicle.
- Filter by Type (Rigid, Regular or Adjustable), then choose your length.
- Not sure about a specific vehicle or seat? Contact us before ordering with the make, model, year and seat position, and we will confirm fit.

Safety and correct use
Our extenders are E4 and E8 certified, break-strength tested, and made in a DOT-registered, ISO-certified facility. They are built to match your vehicle's factory buckle. Your vehicle's retractor, pretensioner and airbag systems are not modified, and your seat belt sensor still detects a buckled belt.
We offer lifetime returns and exchanges on all orders.
If an extender does not fit, contact us and we will help. See our returns policy for details.
- Use an extender only to achieve proper, certified restraint use. Do not use one to silence a seat belt chime.
- Choose the shortest length that lets you buckle comfortably, and check for slack and twists.
- Install it correctly and click both connections until they latch. Tug each one to confirm.
- Do not use an extender that feels loose, does not click securely, or releases without pressing the button. Contact us for the correct model for your vehicle.
- Use it only in the vehicle and seat it was matched to.
- Do not attach one extender to another.
- Do not use an extender with a child restraint.

Frequently asked questions
Questions about your duty vehicle?
Talk to our team ↗Why do officers use seat belt extenders?
Duty belts, body armor and equipment can make a standard seat belt too short or the buckle hard to reach. An extender adds length or lifts the buckle so the officer can buckle in.
What seat belt extender do police departments choose?
Agencies we supply tend to prefer the 5 inch rigid extender in black. Regular and adjustable extenders are also available for officers who mainly need more belt length.
Are seat belt extenders allowed in patrol vehicles?
It depends on your vehicle manufacturer and your agency. Check your vehicle's owner's manual and your agency's policy, and ask your fleet manager. We cannot approve an extender on behalf of a manufacturer or an agency.
Will an extender fit my police vehicle?
Contact us with your vehicle's make, model, year and seating position so we can help confirm fit before you order. Police-package vehicles can differ from civilian models.
How do I choose a length with duty gear on?
Pick the shortest length that lets you buckle comfortably with your gear on, and check that the lap belt sits low across your hips and the belt lies flat. If your gear stops the belt from sitting correctly, contact us.
Can my agency order for a fleet?
Yes. Agencies ordering 50 or more units can email dillon@seatbeltextenders.com for agency pricing. Include your agency name, the vehicles, the seat positions, the style and length, and the quantity.
